Olivine-Hypersthene Chondrite (L6)

This meteorite fell to Earth on the afternoon of August 14, 1992 when local citizens witnessed an explosion followed by a shower of stones. Several meteorites crashed though buildings including a railroad station and a prison. Although approx. 300 kilos fell, L6 type chondrites are low in iron with microscopic flecks of magnesium-iron silicates. Nearly all of the recovered fragments have a black with larger fragments displaying thin annealed  fractures suggesting that the meteorite broke up at a rather high altitude.
